The Urge to Cut Ties · Online, in English

You want to cut it off, right now, once and for all

The clean break feels good for three days. Then it leaves you worse than before. This page isn't here to talk you into staying or to push you out the door — it's here to look, together, at the size of the step your instinct is asking you to take.

Systemic Approach

When the urge takes over

The heroic break isn't weakness or strength. It's a step sized for a crisis, not for a life.

Something in you wants to end it today — the relationship, the job, the friendship, the whole situation, all at once. The urgency feels enormous, like if you don't act right now you'll stay trapped forever. You're not being dramatic and you're not weak: you're in a state where the mind reaches for the biggest gesture available, because it feels like the only proof that things will actually change.

This shows up often for people moving between two languages and two worlds — the ones who had to become the one who "just handles it," in a place far from the family and friends who'd normally slow that decision down. Therapy here doesn't tell you to wait it out or to push through it alone. It helps you find the step that's actually yours to take right now — not the ten, not nothing, the one that holds.

Does this sound familiar?

3 signs this might be you

You've tried this before

You cut it off, confronted it, made the big call. It lasted a few days. Then you were back where you started, feeling like you're simply not capable of change.

🌡️

You're running hot

The urgency to resolve everything right now is intense. It feels like if you don't act immediately, you'll be stuck in this exact spot forever.

📉

Each round leaves you worse

Every time the big gesture falls apart, your trust in yourself drops a little more. The crash that follows the leap costs more than the situation you were trying to escape.

Who's with you

I'm Ricardo, and this doesn't have to be a decision you make alone

I'm a clinical psychologist with more than 15 years working with people in the middle of decisions that feel urgent and enormous, trained in systemic family therapy. I'm Colombian, based in Barranquilla, and I see clients online. Many of the people I work with in English think in Spanish first — they're far from home, without the people who'd normally sit with them through a hard call, having to be the one who "just handles it." You don't have to translate that part before we start.

A step this size is easier to size correctly with someone next to you. If this feels like the moment, let's look at it together — at your pace, no pressure toward staying or leaving.

Rules on cross-border online therapy vary by country and by state, so it's worth checking what applies where you live — and this never replaces local emergency care.

My approach

This is how I work with the urge to cut ties abruptly

I won't tell you to "do nothing" or "wait until you feel calm" — that doesn't work when the urgency is real. What works is sizing the step correctly. Your instinct to get out of the situation is valid; what needs adjusting is how big the move is.

💬

One step up, not ten

If where you are today is a 4 on the change you want, the urge pushes you toward a 10. But a 10 doesn't hold when it's launched from a 4. What holds is the 5 — one step up, measurable, repeatable, something you can actually do this week without your body giving out on you.

🛡️

Survive first, structure after

That's not settling — it's how you use the resources you actually have. When you're running on empty, the big decisions get made with resources you don't have yet. The smaller step gets made with what you do have, right now.

🌍

Structuring it from a distance

If you're outside your home country, the crisis can feel bigger because the people who'd usually slow you down aren't nearby. Sizing the step with someone else becomes even more useful, not less.

How we start

A clear first step, no pressure

1

You book your assessment session

Message me on WhatsApp or leave your details in the form. We'll set up a first 60-minute video-call session, at a reduced rate (50% off).

2

We look at what's actually urgent

In that first session I listen to your situation and what's pushing for the big move right now. No rushed verdicts, no jargon — just understanding, together, what the real step in front of you looks like.

3

We size the step together

You decide with real information, not from the heat of the moment. If it feels right for you, we agree on a process built around what you're actually facing. If not, I'll still point you toward what you need.

Right now you need to survive — that can be the base. Let's build it in a way that actually holds.

Your first step

Start with an assessment session

Slowing down the urge to make the big move alone is one of the hardest things to do by yourself. This first session is where we size the real step together — neither heroic nor passive, the one that holds.
