When the mirror stings

Recognizing yourself in what you rejected isn't a verdict. It's information.

You said it in the exact tone your mother used to use. You heard a phrase come out of your own mouth that you swore you'd never repeat, and for a second you didn't recognize your own voice. Or it's smaller than that: the thing that irritates you most in someone else turns out to be something you do too, just wearing a different shape. That sting isn't guilt — it's the sign that you touched something real, something you can actually look at while there's still time to choose differently.

Leaving changes a person — and going back, or even just a call with the people from home, can put that change on display in a way nothing else does. You visit, or you get on a video call, and they keep talking to the person who left: the one who laughed at the same jokes, agreed with the same things, hadn't yet built a life inside a language that wasn't originally theirs. You're not exactly that person anymore, and there's no clean way to say so without it landing as if you're rejecting where you came from.

Who's with you

I'm Ricardo, and you won't have to sort this out alone

I'm a clinical psychologist with more than 15 years working with people going through identity crisis, trained in systemic family therapy. I'm Colombian, based in Barranquilla, and I see clients online. But before any title, I'm someone who understands what it's like to hold two languages and two versions of yourself at once. Many of the people I work with in English think in Spanish first — they moved countries, or grew up between two worlds, and noticed along the way that the person they became doesn't fully match the person their family back home still expects to find. You don't have to explain that part to me first.

Looking at who you've become is easier with someone next to you. If this feels like the moment, let's take the first step together — at your pace, no pressure.

My approach

This is how I work with identity crisis in therapy

I work from a systemic-relational approach: I don't look at the person you've become as a problem to correct, but as something shaped by your story, your relationships, and the moves — geographic, cultural, generational — that asked you to change.

🧠

Understanding, not just judging yourself

We don't stop at the moment that stung. We look at what shaped that shift — your story, the relationships that formed you, the versions of you that different rooms required — so you can look at yourself with more clarity and less self-punishment.

🌿

Your relationships speak too

Who you are shows up differently with your parents, your partner, your kids, your coworkers. We look at those different rooms together, instead of assuming there's one true version hiding underneath.

🌱

Choosing who you are, not just remembering who you were

The goal isn't to go back to an old version of yourself, or to defend the new one at all costs. It's for you to recognize which parts you want to keep, which ones you're ready to let go of, and choose that on purpose.

How we start

A clear first step, no pressure

1

You book your assessment session

Message me on WhatsApp or leave your details in the form. We'll set up a first 60-minute video-call session, at a reduced rate (50% off).

2

We get to know your situation

In that first session I listen to your story, what's shifted, and what showed you the mirror. No rushed diagnoses, no jargon — just understanding, together, what you need.

3

We shape the process together

You decide with real information, not blindly. If it feels right for you, we agree on a process built around you. If not, I'll still point you toward what you need.

You don't have to erase who you were to build who you're becoming. The goal is to recognize yourself again, on your own terms.
