Systemic Approach

When it's never enough

That critical voice didn't start with you. You get through it by understanding who taught it to you.

You compare yourself, you demand more from yourself, you tell yourself it's still not enough even when you're doing things right. That inner voice that judges you feels so much like your own that you never even question it — but you weren't born with it: you learned it, at some point, from someone or something. For a lot of people who grew up moving between Spanish and English, that voice took shape early — maybe you were the one translating for your parents before you were ready, or you carry the quiet weight of feeling like you should be enough because they gave up so much so you could get here.

The world around you might say "just love yourself more," as if it were a simple decision. But low self-esteem isn't solved with positive phrases: you get through it by understanding where that self-criticism comes from, and building, little by little, a different inner voice.

Who's with you

I'm Ricardo, and you won't be alone in this

I'm a clinical psychologist with more than 15 years of experience, trained in systemic family therapy. I'm Colombian, based in Barranquilla, and I see clients online. But before any title, I'm someone who understands what it's like to hold two languages and two worlds at once. Many of the people I work with in English think in Spanish first — they migrated, or grew up shuttling between countries, or had to become the responsible one in a language nobody taught them for that job. You don't have to explain that part to me first.

Self-esteem is easier to work through with someone next to you. If this feels like the moment, let's take the first step together — at your pace, no pressure.

My approach

This is how I work with low self-esteem in therapy

I work from a systemic-relational approach: I don't look at your self-criticism as a character flaw, but as something learned in your history of relationships — which means it can also be unlearned.

🔍

Where that critical voice comes from

We look together at who spoke to you that way first, how often, and whether that pressure ever actually helped you.

⚖️

The double standard you use on yourself

You're almost always harder on yourself than on anyone else. We work so the way you treat yourself is at least as fair as the way you treat other people.

🌤️

Building self-worth that doesn't depend on performing

The goal isn't to "love yourself always." It's for your worth to stop depending on what you achieve or how you measure up against everyone else.

How we start

A clear first step, no pressure

1

You book your assessment session

Message me on WhatsApp or leave your details in the form. We'll set up a first 60-minute video-call session, at a reduced rate (50% off).

2

We get to know your situation

In that first session I listen to how that critical voice shows up in your day to day, and since when you've recognized it. No rushed diagnoses, no jargon — just understanding, together, what you need.

3

We shape the process together

You decide with real information, not blindly. If it feels right for you, we agree on a process built around you. If not, I'll still point you toward what you need.

It's not about silencing that critical voice overnight. It's about it no longer getting the final word.

Frequently asked questions

Is low self-esteem the same as depression?

Not necessarily, though they can happen together. In the assessment session we look at your specific situation to understand what's going on.

How is self-esteem worked on in therapy, beyond just talking?

We identify concrete patterns of self-criticism — phrases, situations that trigger them — and practice, step by step, new ways of responding to that voice.

How long does it take to notice changes?

It varies from person to person; some changes start to show within weeks, but the full process is defined together, based on your situation.

Do you work in English if I think in Spanish first?

Yes. Sessions are in English, and you never have to translate your story first — I understand what it's like to move between both languages.

How much does the first session cost?

US$25 (50% off the regular US$49.99 rate), 60 minutes by video call.
